ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Background

Pan Africa ILGA (PAI) is the largest membership based and democratically organised LGBTI organisation in Africa. We currently have 106 member organisations throughout the continent working on human rights and equality for LGBTI people. Our secretariat is based in Johannesburg, South Africa where we managed to secure registration as a Non-Profit Organisation.

In May 2016, PAI held its third Regional Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa. A total of 184 delegates from 34 countries participated in the conference. There were 2 days of pre-conferences followed by 3 days of the main conference. LGBTI issues were raised and concerns discussed and a new PAI Board was also elected. It was decided that the next Regional Conference would be held in Gaborone, Botswana in 2018.

Pan Africa ILGA – 2018 Regional Conference

The African LGBTI movement increasingly finds itself at the crossroads of change. Where significant progress is made in some countries, deterioration of human rights of LGBTI people can be witnessed in others. The speed with which progress and wins come, vary considerably. But whether change comes overnight or only after years, change has one important common denominator: it can only be achieved through visionary leadership, endurance and strong partnerships. Hence the very growing need for African LGBTI activists to meet in numbers to foster these partnerships, garner the leaders, groom the new ones and be unified as a continental movement.

This Regional Conference shall be held from 31st May 2018 to 4th June 2018 in Gaborone, Botswana co-hosted by LEGABIBO. The theme for this conference shall be Empowering LGBTI Youth: Uniting for an Inclusive Future. The conference is expected to stir discussion toward empowerment, utilisation and the capacity of LGBTI youth, engage on common regional strategies to achieve change in policies discriminating against people on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, create a forum for the exchange best practices, sharing successes and opportunities for effective advocacy on the continent of Africa as well as receiving advocacy training in relation to relevant regional and international bodies including the ACHPR and the UN. During the main conference, we shall review and consider amendments to PAI’s constitution and standing orders while acquiring tools to strengthen PAI in fulfilling its role as a regional organisation.

Thematic Focus

We will soon ask you to send in abstracts addressing a broad range of issues including youth enlightenment through education, the state of availability and access to education for young LGBTI individuals and how this state affect their socio-economic well-being. The issues shall also tackle how our outward presentation, coming out, self-identification and non-identification and the causes we fight for affect the relationships we have with the rest of the society, how the LGBTI struggle is affected by the struggles of other demographics and whether these struggles are linked in any way. We will look at how working together can improve the end goals of the struggles.

Your abstracts should also address LGBTI health considering what innovative methods and activist approaches can be utilised to improve the community’s health (sexual, reproductive and mental). They should consider the challenges and opportunities while looking at existing practices and ways in which to broaden the scope.

How technology has brought the community together will be another area to be considered. How it has improved or risked the lives of individuals in the community and how best we can harness the power of technology to better our society.
